What is HIV exactly?

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It can weaken your immune system, but it’s also possible to have HIV without knowing it – that’s why it’s so important to get tested.

HIV can be passed via blood, semen, rectal fluid, vaginal fluid, and breast milk. Sex and sharing needles are the most common forms of transmission.

There’s no cure for HIV, but getting checked regularly and using individualized ART treatment can help prevent passing or getting HIV.

How does testing work?

Testing is the only way to know for sure if a person has HIV. You should get checked at least once a year if you are sexually active, and/or have a new sexual partner since your last test.

Several types of HIV testing technologies exist in Canada and are available in hospitals, health clinics, pharmacies, and even at home using a self-testing kit.

HIV tests are typically performed on blood or oral fluid, but can also be performed on urine.
